Finding Lasting Relief from Migraines with Ayurveda

April 10, 2025 6 min read

Chronic migraine is one of the most debilitating neurological conditions, affecting over 200 million people worldwide. Despite advances in pharmaceutical treatment, many patients continue to suffer from inadequate control, medication overuse headache, and significant quality-of-life impairment. Ayurveda offers a systematic, root-cause approach that can dramatically reduce both the frequency and severity of migraines.

The Ayurvedic View of Migraine

Migraine corresponds most closely to Ardhavabhedaka in Ayurvedic texts — literally 'that which splits one side of the head.' It is classified as a primarily Vata-Pitta disorder. Excess Vata in the nervous system creates hypersensitivity and triggers the neurological cascade, while aggravated Pitta drives the inflammatory component — the throbbing pain, photophobia, nausea, and heat intolerance that characterise a migraine attack. Stress, irregular sleep, eye strain, skipped meals, and hormonal fluctuations are identified as common triggers, consistent with modern understanding.

Nasya Therapy

Nasya — the administration of medicated oils or herbal preparations through the nasal passages — is the primary Panchakarma therapy for all disorders above the neck, including migraines. The nasal route provides direct access to the central nervous system, allowing the medicinal compounds to act on the brain and cranial nerves rapidly. At Ayusparsh, we typically use Anu Taila or Shadbindu Taila for Nasya in migraine patients. A course of 7–14 days of daily Nasya, repeated seasonally, produces significant and lasting reduction in migraine frequency.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara — the continuous, gentle pouring of warm medicated oil over the forehead for 30–45 minutes — is one of Ayurveda's most powerful neurological therapies. It directly calms the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, reduces cortisol, and induces a profound state of neurological rest that has no pharmaceutical equivalent. Research has shown Shirodhara to reduce headache severity scores significantly, improve sleep quality, and lower anxiety — all factors involved in migraine chronification.

Herbal Treatment

Key herbs include Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) — a nervine tonic that strengthens the nervous system and reduces neuroinflammation; Shankhapushpi — for mental clarity and reducing vascular headache; Jatamansi — a potent nervine sedative that reduces Vata hypersensitivity; and Trayodashanga Guggulu — a classical formulation specifically indicated for neurological Vata disorders. These are combined with Pitta-reducing herbs like Shatavari and Amla in a personalised formula.
